Introduction

When I look at these four learning domains, I have to admit that I sprinkle all 4 of them into my teaching practices at different times. I think the key is to master when to use each theory and know why it is best for that situation. I feel as though this can only come through a lot of trial and error/success.

To be honest I see myself as a connectivism teacher, because this reminds me quite a bit of the inquiry based learning model I like to use. In my classes I often give the students the “egg shell” idea and from there it is up to them on how they will fill the egg. Of course there are certain parameters but these parameters do not limit intelligence, innovation, or creativity.

Let’s take video design project:

Needs

  • 4-5 minutes
  • A genre of film you enjoy
  • Concepts of that genre you have learned

From here students can hand in a video project, a comic book video, a documentary, or anything else they think would fit within the parameters.

I feel that we can get the best out of the students when you allow them to follow their interest. If given a choice of something we liked or hated doing, I think we would all pick what we liked, and the work we would put into would have a far superior result. Of course not all students learn like this, so as a teacher you are still going around doing your check ins, and modifying the assignment for the students that may need some more concrete guidelines.

As for my App (KAhoot) It does have the option of being in all four domains. On its basic level (teacher makes kahoot for kids) it leans heavy on Behaviourism and Cognitivism. Do something good get rewarded (top of the leader board) don’t get answers right lose points and marks. But I feel we start entering new domains when we allow the students to make their own Kahoots for the rest of the class, they will develop a great knowledge of the material and will be able to teach it to the rest of the class. Every app has its advantages and disadvantages; it is up to us as teachers to find out what they are.
